One Song

Saturday 6th July - Sunday 28th July

 9:30am-5pm every day

One Song is a video installation from artist Kadir Karababa about how songs are carried across borders and continents and yet remain firmly rooted in the places they were first sung.

Audiences will come face to face with women as they sing acapella, sometimes alone, sometimes overlapping in a chorus of voices.

Inspired by his family story of migration from Eastern Turkey to London, Karababa worked with women across Medway who had the shared experience of having been born outside of and moved to the UK.

In a series of sessions in May and June 2024 contributors shared personal stories with each other and contemplated the question, “which one song takes you back to the place you first called home?”

Sung in their original languages, the songs have English subtitles allowing the viewer to experience their themes of land, love, and loss.

One Song was originally commissioned by Counterpoints Arts and exhibited at the Museum of the Home in London.

This iteration of the work was made possible thanks to public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
